SUMMARY

The discussion centers on selecting an appropriate undergraduate chemistry textbook for a Chemistry 1 course. Participants recommend "Chemistry" by Zumdahl and "Chemistry: A Molecular Approach" by McMurry as excellent choices for comprehensive coverage. Additionally, "Chemistry" by Brady is highlighted for its thorough treatment of foundational topics, including bonding theory, thermodynamics, and both organic and inorganic chemistry, making it suitable for the first two years of study.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of chemistry concepts
  • Familiarity with bonding theory
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics and thermochemistry
  • Awareness of organic and inorganic chemistry principles
NEXT STEPS
  • Research "Chemistry" by Zumdahl for comprehensive coverage of introductory topics
  • Explore "Chemistry: A Molecular Approach" by McMurry for a molecular perspective on chemistry
  • Investigate "Chemistry" by Brady for its detailed treatment of advanced topics
  • Review supplemental materials on bonding theory and thermodynamics for deeper understanding
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for undergraduate students preparing for Chemistry 1, educators selecting textbooks, and anyone seeking to refresh their knowledge in foundational chemistry concepts.

So I haven't taken a Chemistry class in about 10 years and even then I did horrible. I think this was because I just didn't care. I'm confident I can pick up the material now. Anyway, this fall I have to take Chem 1 and want to be prepared. What's a good (popular) undergrad Chemistry textbook? Thanks.

There are a million of them, but either Zumdahl or McMurry will give you the right coverage.

I'm using Brady and can recommend it. It covers, from what I reckon, the first or first two years of standard chemistry, including bonding theory, structure, thermodynamics, thermochemistry, organic and inorganic chemistry, plus an appendix with more advanced orbital theory.
