Homework Statement

Cl2 and BrCl each react with aqueous KI.
(i) Describe what would be seen when Cl2 is bubbled through aqueous KI for several minutes.
initially :
after several minutes :

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

I thought initially Cl2 would get decolourised, so the green/pale yellow colour fades
And after several minutes, a purple vapour would form (I2)

Is what you have thought wrong? I see no trouble in it, unless the rate of reaction was too slow that nothing happened while you kept waiting.

The answer is:
initially: the solution turns yellow/brown
finally: black/grey solid forms.
I though iodine gas would form, not solid.

Two questions:
1) Are both Cl2 and BrCl reacting with KI in different beakers or the same one?
2) Are the reaction conditions given?

I think they are reacting in one beaker and there are no reaction conditions given.

I am really not sure what happens. Could it be that another inter-halogen compound forms?

I've no idea, they haven't provided a reaction.
