In summary, this thread was created to discuss the pros and cons of the two presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. It was mentioned that opinions should be stated as such and supported by acceptable sources. There was a link provided to an article discussing a real debate between Clinton and Sanders over the death penalty. It was also mentioned that Clinton's claims of being an average person may be questionable due to her wealth and powerful connections. Sources were provided showing the Clintons earned over $153 million in paid speeches, including to big banks. The unique circumstances of Clinton's wealth and influence were also highlighted. The idea for the thread was praised, but there was some disappointment in the lack of posts. One member expressed their support for Sanders and listed areas where

Opinion: Clinton and the GOP want to give the government the power to kill its own people but somehow Sanders is the one who's going to try to take away your freedom.

Hillary keeps making the mistake of claiming to be an average person:

Yes, Hillary, but after you have been knocked down, you have a treasure chest of some $30 million, and a group of friends , each more powerful than any average person could ever dream of having , to help get you back in the game. Nothing wrong per se with being rich and powerful , just stop pretending you are anything else, that you are an average person.

May she's average for the top 1%?

Bill and Hillary Clinton together earned "more than $153 million in paid speeches from 2001 until Hillary Clinton launched her presidential campaign last spring, a CNN analysis shows.

In total, the two gave 729 speeches from February 2001 until May, receiving an average payday of $210,795 for each address. The two also reported at least $7.7 million for at least 39 speeches to big banks, including Goldman Sachs and UBS, with Hillary Clinton, the Democratic 2016 front-runner, collecting at least $1.8 million for at least eight speeches to big banks."

Not exactly an average person, but may be an average millionaire celebrity?http://www.nytimes.com/politics/fir...ends-speaking-fees-paid-by-wall-street-firms/
She described her paid speaking — which spanned events for financial firms and a number of other trade associations and businesses, which typically paid fees of around $225,000 per speech — as a chance for business leaders to hear about her views on world events.

Clinton's extraordinary personal wealth is a small part of the measure of the uniqueness of her circumstances, of her influence. How many billionaires have her ability to pick up a phone to her foundation, to US officials, to foreign officials, and exert influence.

Good thread idea!

Where are all the posts? I would have expected a much more lively discussion given the narrowing race between Sanders and Clinton!

I absolutely went nuts during last night's debate (3/9/16), in which Sanders came out attacking and continued to do so all night long. Big Sanders fan here!

I personally think Sanders has better policy positions and judgment on:

a.) campaign finance reform
b.) healthcare
c.) taxes
d.) Middle East foreign policy

I'm skeptical or critical towards Sanders on:

e.) free college
f.) immigration reform
g.) planned parenthood support (I'm pro-choice)

I'm not against free college, but wonder about the costs, effects on quality of education, and appropriateness. I'm not sure college is for everyone, as lots of people have good careers without it.

On immigration reform, I worry about the burden of 10 million+ newly eligible people for social welfare programs in the U.S. If we give citizenship or legal status to all these people, would they flood our social services and overburden our system?
