Computing the halo mass function and the SFH

SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on computing the halo mass function and star formation history (SFH) using catalogs of dark matter halos and stellar positions. To determine the halo mass function, one must calculate the volume of the catalog and utilize Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profiles, which require knowledge of mass and concentration. For SFH, the challenge lies in converting stellar positions and birthdates into a volumetric rate of solar masses per year. Key references include the original NFW paper and the Wikipedia page on NFW profiles.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profiles
  • Knowledge of dark matter halo characteristics
  • Familiarity with calculating density profiles and virial radius
  • Basic concepts of star formation history (SFH) in astrophysics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research how to calculate the volume of a dark matter halo catalog
  • Study the Navarro-Frenk-White profile in detail
  • Learn methods for deriving star formation rates from stellar catalogs
  • Explore techniques for volumetric analysis in astrophysical datasets
USEFUL FOR

Astronomers, astrophysicists, and researchers involved in cosmology and galaxy formation who are analyzing dark matter halos and star formation rates.

Hi,
I have a catalog of dark matter halos, which consists of their COM positions and their masses.
I need to determine the halo mass function. How can I do? I mean, it is easy to plot the number of halos between mass M and M+dM, but how can I have information on the volume? I don't get it.

Similarly, how can I determine the SFH in terms of solar masses per year per volume, when my stellar catalog contains only stars positions and their birthdate? I mean the problem it is alway the volume.

I know it is a stupid question but I really don't get it.

Thanks in advance

Well... how big is the volume of the catalog?
