Hi
I'm trying to connect two fly wheels together which are elevated on a bar and about 12 feet apart, the one wheel is driven by a motor and I would like the second wheel to be synchronised in rotation with it.
Belts and/or chains are the obvious way forward but would it be difficult to connect the wheels together with a bar or metal linkage a bit like the wheels on the old locomotives were?
I appreciate your thoughts and thanks for your time.

Suggest you post a sketch of the layout. Can you just use a shaft?
 
Sounds like you want an axle.

If the two flywheels are not on the same axis, then belts or chains are far better than any linkage. And modern synchronous belts, such as the Gates Poly Chain, can handle over 1000 hp.
