Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around recommendations for useful mechanical engineering books, specifically covering subjects such as thermodynamics, strength of materials, theory of machines, physical metallurgy, manufacturing processes, and machine drawing. Participants seek detailed resources suitable for self-study in preparation for final exams.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests suggestions for mechanical engineering books covering various subjects in detail for self-study.
  • Another participant recommends "Engineering Thermodynamics" by Rogers and Mayhew, praising its comprehensive nature and suggesting it covers broader thermal sciences.
  • Additional recommendations include "Solid Mechanics" by I H Shames and "Manufacturing Processes" by DeGarmo.
  • A different book, "Mechanics of Materials" by Beer and Johnston, is also suggested for the strength of materials topic.
  • One participant mentions "Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics" by Moran and Shapiro as a valuable resource based on personal experience.
  • A participant shifts the focus slightly, asking for engineering books that inspire imagination similar to science books.
  • "Driving Force: The Natural Magic of Magnets" is suggested as a science book that sparks interest, though it is noted that it lacks extensive formulas.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the need for quality book recommendations, but there are multiple suggestions with no consensus on a single best resource. The discussion includes both technical recommendations and a more imaginative approach to learning.

Contextual Notes

Some recommendations are based on personal experience, and the effectiveness of the suggested books may depend on individual learning preferences and specific curriculum requirements.

Who May Find This Useful

Students in mechanical engineering or related fields preparing for exams, as well as those interested in engaging and imaginative science literature.

Thermodynamics: Engineering Thermodynamics by Rogers and Mayhew
If I were to write praise for this book it woukd turn out to be a long article but you can get a glimpse of its features at http://www.amazon.com/dp/0582045665/?tag=pfamazon01-20---indeed a ten star book.
Actually it's about Thermal Sciences rather than it's subset thermodynamics. So if you have this one you can refer to it for many of the courses!
Others:
Solid Mechanics by I H Shames
Manufacturing processes DeGarmo

Hey sorry i don't want to send your question in a different directions but its been a few days lol. Are there any engineering book that are like some science books where it just kinds sparks your imagination and interest?

Physics High,

This book, Driving Force, the natural magic of magnets is a science book which sparks your imagination and interest, but it's definitely not chock full of formula etc.. In fact, I'll send you my copy no charge if you want to pm me your address.
