Design Pump w/ 158m & 250m Water Levels

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the design of a pump system for water supply, specifically addressing the requirements for a pump with an intake water level of 158m and a treatment plant water level of 250m. Participants explore the context of the design project, including considerations for engineering disciplines and system components.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants inquire whether the goal is to design a pump itself or to design a complete system that includes pump selection.
  • There is a question regarding which engineering discipline—mechanical or civil—would primarily oversee the design of such a pump system.
  • A participant provides details about their project, mentioning available data such as top water levels and distances, and seeks guidance on designing the intake structure and its capacity.
  • Another participant discusses challenges faced in a related project involving a 60km water pipeline, specifically issues with hydro testing and the type of pipe used.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express varying perspectives on the responsibilities of different engineering disciplines in the design process, and there is no consensus on the specific approach to take for the pump design or the related project challenges.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not fully defined the requirements and restrictions of the projects, nor have they resolved the technical challenges mentioned, such as hydro testing failures.

What is the context of your question? If it is a school question, could you please show us the full question?

You actually want to design a pump or you just want to design a system and select a pump?

If this was a real life situation, would it fall on a Mechanical Engineers guard or Civil or both?

iam doing a project on water supply for my design project class in school.how can i start with the design.data available are top water level for intake top water level for treatment plant top water level for storage reservior, the distances from intake to treatment plant and from treatment plant to storage.how can i desing my intake structure and its capacity?

What are the requirements and restrictions of the project? What all do you need to design (e.g. piping system, structure)?

i am doing a project on 60km water pipe line from parvathi river, rajasthan.here the water level is high.so hydro testing is getting fail for several times.K-9 Ductile pipe of 600mm dia pipe-line.how to get success in it.i am fresher for this field.
