SUMMARY

This discussion explores the philosophical implications of time perception influenced by gravity, specifically how mass affects the passage of time according to scientific laws. It posits that different parts of the body may experience time differently due to gravitational effects, suggesting that while the difference is negligible, it raises questions about simultaneity and the nature of present experiences. The conclusion emphasizes that rather than existing in the past or future, different body parts may experience distinct presents, highlighting the relativity of time perception.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of general relativity and its implications on time perception
  • Basic knowledge of gravitational effects on time, particularly near massive bodies like Earth
  • Familiarity with philosophical concepts of time and simultaneity
  • Awareness of scientific laws governing mass and time dilation
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of general relativity and time dilation effects
  • Explore philosophical texts on the nature of time and simultaneity
  • Investigate experiments related to gravitational time dilation
  • Study the implications of mass on time perception in various physical contexts
USEFUL FOR

Philosophers, physicists, and anyone interested in the intersection of science and philosophy regarding time perception and relativity.

Hi all,

According to laws of science, a very heavy body (having a lot of mass) slows time due to its gravitation. So, near Earth time is moving slow in comparison to things that are at a distance from it. Now, only for philosophical purpose I want to contend that our feet are in a different time as compared to our head ( i know that the difference would be infinitely small and impossible to measure, even after great scientific advancement). So, do we simultaneously live in past as well as future?

I would say that different parts of our body experience the passage of time differently, rather than saying that one part is in the past and one part is in the future. However, you could say that different parts of our body experience a different present, since simultaneity is relative.
