DoE SULI/CCI 2026 Application/Acceptances & Expectations

Click For Summary

SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the Department of Energy's Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) and Computational Chemistry Institute (CCI) 2026 application and acceptance process. Applicants shared their first and second-choice laboratories, including Idaho National Laboratory (INL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), DIII-D, and Jefferson Lab. Interview timelines and acceptance notifications vary by lab, with INL completing offers by March 4, 2024. One accepted intern will work on nuclear reactor thermal-hydraulics modeling alongside a team of interns and researchers. The thread serves as a peer support and information-sharing platform for tracking application statuses and experiences.

PREREQUISITES

  • Understanding of Department of Energy (DOE) SULI and CCI internship programs
  • Familiarity with national laboratories such as INL, ORNL, DIII-D, and Jefferson Lab
  • Knowledge of nuclear reactor thermal-hydraulics modeling concepts
  • Experience with internship application and interview processes in scientific research settings

NEXT STEPS

  • Research specific project areas at INL, ORNL, DIII-D, and Jefferson Lab for SULI/CCI internships
  • Prepare for technical interviews focusing on nuclear engineering and computational chemistry
  • Explore nuclear reactor thermal-hydraulics modeling methodologies and simulation tools
  • Monitor DOE internship application timelines and acceptance notification schedules

USEFUL FOR

Undergraduate students applying to DOE SULI and CCI internships, academic advisors guiding internship applicants, and early-career researchers seeking insights into national laboratory internship processes and project expectations.

Hi all--

I submitted my application for the CCI around a month ago and the anticipation to see if I get accepted or not is overwhelming! My first and second-choice laboratories were INL and ORNL respectively. I wanted to make this thread to help track if anyone else has applied to this and see whether or not you got in too! Also, if anyone has past experience with SULI/CCI I wanted to inquire about how the acceptance rates were, what it was like reviewing an application, participating in the actual internship, etc etc.

Cheers!

Applied to DIII-D as my first choice and second choice Jefferson Lab. Still haven't heard back from them so I'm thinking I didn't get it. Have you heard back from either of them yet?

Sorry this came late, but this afternoon (3/3) I had my third interview and apparently 3/4 was the last day they could actually offer internships at INL.
I never even got into contact with ORNL, but that's probably because INL hadn't deferred me to them. I'm going to do nuclear reactor thermal-hydraulics modeling with a team of about 2 other interns and 5-10 researchers!
I don't know if the dates are the same for DIII-D or Jefferson, but there's still a lot of time left for you to hear back!
