Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around determining whether the point (8, 4, -5) lies on the plane defined by the equation 7x - 3y + 4z = 8. The context includes a past exam question and involves mathematical reasoning related to linear algebra.

Discussion Character

  • Mathematical reasoning
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant, Stephen, presents a calculation to check if the point lies on the plane, concluding that it does not based on the result of the equation.
  • Another participant confirms that Stephen's method of checking the point against the plane equation is valid.
  • A later reply questions the interpretation of the general equation of a plane, "Ax + By + Cz = D," prompting further clarification on its meaning.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the method used to determine if the point lies on the plane, but the discussion includes a question about the interpretation of the plane equation, indicating some uncertainty or need for clarification.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not resolve the interpretation of the plane equation or its implications for understanding the problem.

Hi all,

I got this question from a past exam paper does the point (8 , 4 , -5) lie on the plane 7x - 3y + 4z = 8?

Do you work it out as follows because can't find this example in my Linear Algeria book?

7(8) - 3(4) + 4(-5) = 8
56 - 12 - 20 = 8
24 is not equal to 8
Therefore the following point does not lie on the plane.

Thanks
Stephen

you can do that.

thanks Andrien

What do you understand the sentence "Ax+ By+ Cz= D is the equation of plane p" to mean?
