Participants share their experiences and frustrations regarding work schedules, supervision of temporary staff, and the challenges of balancing work and personal time.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses frustration about having to stay late at work to supervise a temporary employee, disrupting their plans for an early start to the holiday weekend.
  • Another participant mentions needing to work all weekend due to staffing shortages, indicating a shared sense of burden.
  • Concerns are raised about the behavior of a temporary employee, with one participant noting that he avoids eye contact and seems uncomfortable, leading to speculation about his demeanor.
  • Some participants discuss the differences in Labor Day observance, with one noting that many colleges have classes on that day, while others argue that most workplaces observe the holiday.
  • There is a suggestion that the temporary employee might be shy or attracted to one of the participants, reflecting on interpersonal dynamics in the workplace.
  • A humorous suggestion is made about assigning the temporary employee to a broom cupboard with paperwork to keep him occupied.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a mix of agreement on the frustrations of unexpected work demands, but there is disagreement regarding the observance of Labor Day across different workplaces and institutions. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the temporary employee's behavior and the best way to handle the situation.

Contextual Notes

Some participants reference personal experiences that may not be universally applicable, such as specific workplace policies on holidays and the dynamics of temporary staffing. There are also varying assumptions about the nature of the temporary employee's behavior.

I got into work extra early today (woke up at 4 in the morning!), so that I could get out early and enjoy the upcoming three-day holiday weekend (Monday is Labor Day in the states). But nooooo...I just found out that I have to stay and supervise a temp who's here until 5:00.

The best-laid plans...

Ouch, that sucks. Just yell at him a lot to get your anger out. That way at least you'll be ready for the weekend.

At least you get Labor Day off. At most colleges and universities, Labor Day is a normal class day (at least it is here), so we have to teach classes as usual.

To tell you the truth, he kind of gives me the creeps. He doesn't make eye contact with me and has yet to say one word to me...but he seems to get along OK with the guys in the office.

When I talk to him he shoots his eyes from one corner of the room to the other...really FAST...

Um, it's not at most. Every place I've worked has the day off. I preferred when I was at Rutgers and the classes didn't even start until after Labor Day though. Though, my students don't really believe they have the day off...they have exams next week for both our course and physiology. I told them to at least take tomorrow afternoon off when the football game is going on since trying to get anywhere near the building will be quite difficult anyway.

I had plans to leave early today too since I don't have any classes to teach on Fridays and a lot of people already left town yesterday for a long weekend. But, everyone else already leaving meant the students panicking about next week's exam had nobody else to find but me, so I was helping them out all afternoon. I don't want them spending all weekend studying the wrong things, so spent the afternoon helping them tag structures to study from.

You should have put him in the broom cupboard with a ream of paper work and told him to go home when he had finished it.

I'm waiting to see if my boss calls or shows up to ask me to work this weekend. Otherwise I'll be off the whole weekend but still have to work on Monday. I'll probably have to leave early on Monday to make sure to get there on time.

Maybe he's attracted to you. Or is simply shy around females.

Your boss isn't trying to avoid looking at you, he's just looking at the guys behind you. They're all making fun of you behind your back. I thought you knew.
