Egg Drop Contest for Science Survivor

SUMMARY

The Egg Drop Contest for Science Survivor involves constructing a protective capsule for a raw egg using limited materials: 2 full sheets of newspaper, 2 rubber bands, 6 toothpicks, and unlimited glue. The objective is to create the most cost-effective design that can survive a drop from 4-5 meters while ensuring a portion of the egg is visible. The competition emphasizes both the integrity of the egg and the overall cost of the materials used, with newspaper being the most critical component for cushioning the fall.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics principles related to impact and force.
  • Familiarity with cost analysis and budgeting for project materials.
  • Knowledge of structural design concepts for creating protective enclosures.
  • Experience with hands-on construction using everyday materials.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research effective cushioning materials for impact protection.
  • Explore design strategies for lightweight yet sturdy structures.
  • Investigate the physics of free fall and impact forces.
  • Learn about cost-effective engineering principles in project design.
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for students participating in engineering challenges, educators looking for hands-on science projects, and anyone interested in practical applications of physics and design principles.

Materials we are Given:
Raw Egg
2 Full Sheets of Newspaper
2 Rubber Bands
6 Toothpicks
Glue (Unlimited)
-----
You can only use materials from parts department. Materials cannot be returned.
You must eb able to take capsule apart during class to insert egg given by teacher.
A portion of an egg must be showing.
Must survive a high drop from 4-5 meters. (NOT! From a football stadium bleachers.)
-----
Items Costs:
Newspaper (Maximum 2 full sheets)
Full $1000
Half $500
Quarter $250

String (Maximum of 2 M or 20 DM)
Per decimeter (1 DM = 0.1M) $100

Rubber Bands (Maximum 2)
Per Rubber Band $500

Paper Clips (Maximum 2)
Per Paper Clip $500

Toothpicks (Maximum 6)
Per Toothpick $100

Glue
Unlimited NO CHARGE!
-----
Now the goal I am trying to achieve is to build the cheapest and most effective egg dropper. (THE GROUP HAVING AN UNCRACKED EGG AND MOST INEXPENSIVE VEHICLE WINS!) I will take a picture of the studim bleachers today after school and upload the picture afterwards. Thanks you guys if you can help! <3

What the heck...?

:confused::confused::confused:

Just buy up all of the newspaper, as this is the only allotted material that can be used to cushion the fall. Then everyone else will be destined to failure

Ever played Armadillo Run? The costs are just a sort of point system. The more cost effective the design the better.

Never played it or even heard of it, but it looks pretty cool. I'll definitely give it a try.Still don't know what the OP is up to though...
