SUMMARY

Changing industries is a common occurrence for engineers, particularly when transitioning from mechanical design to fields like robotics. Engineers with experience in the oil and gas sector can leverage their skills by emphasizing transferable talents in their resumes. The mathematical principles underlying various engineering disciplines, such as electronics and optics, often have direct correlations with mechanical engineering, facilitating smoother transitions. Thorough research into the new industry is essential for a successful career shift.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of mechanical engineering principles
  • Familiarity with robotics design concepts
  • Resume writing skills tailored for industry transitions
  • Knowledge of transferable skills across engineering disciplines
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the fundamentals of robotics engineering
  • Learn about industry-specific software tools used in robotics design
  • Explore networking opportunities within the robotics field
  • Study resume optimization techniques for engineering career changes
USEFUL FOR

Engineers considering a career change, particularly those transitioning from mechanical design to robotics, as well as career advisors and resume writers specializing in engineering fields.

How common is it for engineers to change industries? Like, say your a mechanical design engineer and you've worked in the oil&gas industry for 8 years, and you want to start working as a robotics design engineer...or something more practical, but just a different industry.

Real common! Research whatever you plan to switch into, and rewrite your resume to emphasize your talents vis a vis the new field. For example, maths underlying electronics engineering for the most part have precisely corresponding maths in mechanical engineering, optics, etc. A leap from mechanical design to robotics would be a small one.
