Mexican soccer fans chanted "Osama! Osama!" during a recent match against the U.S., reflecting political animosity. The crowd also booed the U.S. national anthem and celebrated their team's loss with jeers. Participants in the discussion debated the motivations behind such behavior, attributing it to a mix of historical grievances and typical sports fan antics. While some dismissed the incident as tasteless yet harmless, others noted that it highlights deeper tensions between the two nations. Overall, the incident illustrates how sports can intersect with political sentiments, particularly in a charged atmosphere.

Mexican soccer fans chant "Osama Osama"

Interesting.

"Last Thursday, when the U.S. played Canada in a qualifying round in Zapopan before 1,500 Mexicans, the crowd hooted "The Star-Spangled Banner," it booed U.S. goals. And it chanted "Osama! Osama! Osama" as the American players left the field with a 2-0 victory."

OOPS! That's supposed to be my thread! I was visiting Ivan in his office and he got busy on the phone and I took over his computer. Forgot to log in as ME! Sorry!

WorldNetDaily articles are sort of...unreliable when it comes to a little thing I like to call "reality". They'll probably suggest that we bomb Mexico next, or ban soccer, or some sort of idiocy.

It was a bottom-of-screen news blurp from CNN that made me google it. This was the first link I found. Sorry I'm not 'up' on what you consider 'reliable'.

Would this source make you happier?

I was actually hoping to generate somewhat of an intelligent discussion about the possible reasons for such animosity toward us from Mexico. Something akin to this site:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/143512

I thought that, with the people at this forum, we would get a lot more intelligent posts than theirs, though. I guess not...
Thanks for the attempt to thwart it with your nastiness, Zero. You can be pretty tiring sometimes...

No, seriously, that website is likely to blame Clinton for the events at a Mexican arena...

Anyhoo, this is really a non-issue, isn't it? Bush has made America look foolish, and Mexican soccer fans are notorious for their scathing political rhetoric.

Soccer hooligans and politics.. I wouldn't put too much value to that..

Mexicans have plenty of reasons, both good and bad, to hate Americans. Sports fans are likely to do just about anything stupid. Combine the two, and you get something like this. I imagine that a fair number of the dead in the World Trade Centers were of Mexican origin, possibly even Mexican citizens. I doubt that occurred to the bozos in the crowd.

Yeah, compared to soccer fans killing each other, this is sort of a minor thing.

"Football" (hell it is NOT soccer, to the REST of the world its football or a variant of) is a great game. And as Monique said, football hooligans and politics... well most hooligans would be beaten in an IQ test by a glass of water!

I think it's harmless. Tasteless -- incredibly tasteless -- but harmless.

not SOCCER. That is just what Americans call it. Why should the rest of the world have to change? Germans call it "Fu©¬ball", and I am sure many Germanic speaking languages call it similar. The Spanish say "Futbol", the Russians call it "Footbol" (cant get russian lettering to work!), the Italians say "Calcio" meaning "foot", the French say "de football"...need i go on?

America did take almost half of their territory (now western half of U.S.) back in the ninteenth century. I would be pretty mad too. At least America wans't so imperialistic (suprising since it was under President Polk) to just take over the country in itself when America won the war like they did with the Philippines.

Loss of life is nothing new to soccer. What is the world record for fatalities at a sporting event (collapsing stadium)? My condolences.

That tragedy was caused by the popularity of FOOTBALL and poor crowd management.

Your wrong about one thing jimmyp, i would beat a glass of water in a QI test.
