SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on solving a rational equation related to two individuals painting a wall. Person 1 paints 3m² in x hours, while Person 2 paints 7m² in x + 2 hours. Together, they can paint 22m² in 10 hours, leading to the equation 3/x + 7/(x+2) = 22/10. This equation is confirmed as the correct starting point for solving the problem of how long Person 2 would take to paint the wall alone.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of rational equations
  • Basic algebraic manipulation skills
  • Familiarity with rates of work problems
  • Knowledge of solving equations involving variables
NEXT STEPS
  • Practice solving rational equations with similar work-rate problems
  • Learn how to derive equations from word problems
  • Explore methods for solving equations with multiple variables
  • Review concepts of rates and their applications in real-world scenarios
USEFUL FOR

Students studying algebra, educators teaching rational equations, and anyone interested in applying mathematical concepts to real-world work-rate problems.

Homework Statement

Person 1 can paint 3m2 in x hours, person #2 can paint 7m2 in x + 2 hours however together they can paint 22m2 of the wall in 10 hours. How many hours did person #2 take to paint the wall?

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

Im confused at how to start the question. Would I arrange it to to be 3/x + 7/(x+2) = 22/10 if this is how you arrange it I know how to solve I just need to know if this step one is correct?

Do you mean, "How many hours would person #2 take to paint the wall, working alone?"
