Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the appropriate educational level for Open Yale Courses in Physics, specifically whether they are suitable for high school students or undergraduate students. The focus is on understanding the intended audience for these courses.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants propose that the courses are aimed at beginning undergraduate students.
  • Others clarify that this includes the first and second years of undergraduate study.
  • One participant mentions that the courses are designed for beginners in physics at the undergraduate level.
  • A later reply references Yale's undergraduate course catalog, indicating that the courses are part of a calculus-based physics sequence and are considered the second most difficult among four introductory sequences.
  • One participant expresses frustration about engaging in a necropost but hopes the information may still be useful.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that the courses are aimed at beginning undergraduate students, particularly those in their first and second years. However, there is no consensus on the specific grade level or the comparison to high school courses.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of detailed definitions of "beginner" and the absence of explicit criteria for comparing the difficulty of high school versus undergraduate courses.
