Foreign Language for Graduate School

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

Graduate students in mathematics programs often require proficiency in foreign languages, particularly German, French, or Russian. While Chinese and Vietnamese are considered for their utility, they are less common in mathematical research contexts. The consensus among participants suggests prioritizing German, French, or Russian for effective communication and academic collaboration in the field. This aligns with the historical significance of these languages in mathematics research.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of graduate mathematics programs
  • Familiarity with academic language requirements
  • Basic knowledge of language learning methodologies
  • Awareness of global mathematics research trends
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the role of German in historical mathematics literature
  • Explore language learning resources for French and Russian
  • Investigate the demographics of mathematics graduate programs
  • Learn about the impact of language on academic collaboration in STEM fields
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for prospective graduate students in mathematics, language learners interested in academic applications, and educators advising students on language choices for research collaboration.

Hello all, particularly graduate students and PhDs,

I'm planning on learning a foreign language, mostly for fun, but I would like to learn a language used by many of my colleagues in mathematics programs. I've not yet entered graduate school (for mathematics, of course), so I was wondering what the general demographics were for said programs. The obvious choice would seem to be a Chinese dialect, but Vietnamese also stands out as being useful here. Which of those would you recommend? Would you recommend another? I know a lot of mathematics research has been done in Russia and Germany, but I think I want to learn a language to speak, not to learn.

Thank you,
-spb

Many (maybe even most?) graduate level math programs require you to learn either German, French, or Russian. So, I'd recommend one of those.
