Could you clarify what you mean by "making the deduction"? I'm not clear what you're being asked to do.
And, to clarify for myself, the equation is:
[itex]V^2 = V_{0}^2\pm 2g(y-y_0)[/itex]
Correct?
And finally, where are you getting stuck? Can you show us your work so far?
