From turbulent flows to astrophysic

AI Thread Summary
Transitioning from a PhD in mathematical modeling of turbulent flows to a postdoc in astrophysics is feasible, but it depends on the overlap between the two fields. Key considerations include the specific skills and knowledge gained during the PhD that could be applicable to astrophysics, as well as the unique requirements of the postdoc positions being pursued. Candidates should assess their modeling experience and clarify their interests in astrophysics to determine the best path forward. While a second PhD is not necessarily required, demonstrating relevant expertise and adaptability will be crucial for making this career shift.

Hi!

I would like to know your opinion about an eventual jump from a PhD in mathematical modeling of turbulent flows to a postdoc in astrophysics?

Do you think something like this is possible? or the only option is to do a second PhD?

Thanks in advance for your answers =).

How about we go at this differently:

1. What is the overlap between "mathematical modeling of turbulent flows" and "astrophysics"? This can be either in the knowledge of the two fields, or in the skills that you have acquired while doing the former.

2. What exactly is in a specific astrophysics postdoc position (and each position being advertise then to have something unique or different in its requirement) that might find someone with your background useful?

Zz.

It depends. What kind of modelling do you have experience with, and what are you hoping to go into?
