SUMMARY

A graduate student in biosystems engineering has fulfilled the required 24 credit hours for their degree and is considering taking an additional statistics and math course to earn two minors without extending their time in school. The student has free tuition due to a grant but is concerned about the increased workload impacting their thesis completion. Ultimately, the discussion concludes that pursuing the minors is worthwhile if the student is genuinely interested in the material, but unlikely to significantly alter their career trajectory.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of graduate-level course structures
  • Familiarity with thesis requirements in graduate programs
  • Knowledge of minor degree requirements in higher education
  • Basic time management skills for balancing coursework and thesis work
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the requirements for minors in your specific graduate program
  • Explore effective time management techniques for graduate students
  • Investigate the benefits of additional coursework on career prospects

Hi PF,
Im a grad student (masters in biosystems engineering) with 1 more semester to go and I have already fulfilled my required 24 hours to get my degree. My supervisor and I planned my courses so that I would have the whole last semester to work purely on my thesis.

A ME grad student pointed out to me that I could take 1 pretty easy statistics course, and 1 pretty easy math course and get a minor in both.

I get free tuition from a grant, and have to be in school next semester anyway so it's sounding like a good idea -- however I would have to work more to get my thesis done on time.

So is the extra work (but no extra semester) worth it?

If you are interested in learning the material, do it. If you think somehow two minors will change your life, probably not.
