Goldwater Scholarship: Applying as a Sophomore - Any Advice?

What do you guys know about the Goldwater scholarship, in terms of competitiveness, past winners, etc? I thought I'd give it a shot this year and apply. I'm a Sophomore, have perfect grades, and have a lead author paper under review right now, so I thought I'd have a decent shot at it, although two of my rec letters won't be very stellar. Anyone else applying? If so, good luck!

One indicator is the university you're going to, the article lists several which have the most scholars.

I know (not well though) a guy who got it. I think you'll probably have a better shot next year with more experience but it's pretty much a total crap shoot anyways man.
