I know. That is always striking these days. You can see the same thing if you watch the really old shows from the early 50's and on, on Nick At Night...or one of the Nick channels anyway. On the game shows like Beat the Clock, Password, What's my Line, etc, the consolation prize was often a carton of cigarettes! [made by the sponsor of course]

I just watched this over the weekend and it was excellent. The music and the black and white filming added a lot to the mood. Great film! The casting was magnificent.

Don't count on seeing clips like that much longer. And don't count on ever seeing smoking scenes from Good Night and Good Luck on network TV.

1) It seems a little to 1984 to start editing things from the past to make them more politically correct. (What? What do you mean 1984 has been rewritten to cut out the part about rewriting past history?)

2) They're cutting out the smoking scenes, but see nothing wrong with the idea of Tom trying to stab Jerry with a knife, or Jerry trying to roast Tom in the oven? Face it! There's nothing socially redeeming about Tom and Jerry (or The Three Stooges, for that matter). Those cartoons are from the time when cartoons were primarily written for adults.

This reminds of an evening that I spend playing chess with a friend - Edik -from Iran. His cousin was there with her kids who were watching what was then the new HBO channel. A slightly revealing scene came on in which two people were having sex. Hints of nudity and creative camera shots made the scene seem a bit like soft porn, but in reality it was nothing worse than what we see on regular TV today. Nonetheless, Edik's cousin was outraged when she saw what her children were watching, so she turned the channel to a safer selection on the other HBO channel - The Terminator!

I was sitting there in disbelief...Apparently she found that people having their heads blown off was preferable to something as natural as sex.
