    Movies Poll
Click For Summary
A forum discussion among movie enthusiasts on Physics Forums revolves around creating a poll to determine the favorite movies of members. Participants are invited to nominate up to twenty of their all-time favorite films, with the stipulation that these must be full-length features (at least 90 minutes) and can span any genre, year, or language, excluding X-rated films. The thread encourages members to submit their nominations without being influenced by others' choices, and the organizer plans to compile the most nominated films into a final poll. The conversation includes various members sharing their lists, reflecting a diverse range of genres and personal tastes, while some express the challenge of narrowing down their favorites to just twenty. The overall tone is light-hearted and fun, with an emphasis on personal preference rather than critical acclaim. The organizer aims to keep the thread open for additional nominations before finalizing the poll, highlighting the community's engagement and enthusiasm for cinema.

While I don't wish to discourage your efforts, I'm wondering what another poll is intended to accomplish beyond what we've already done.

We've picked our favorite movies. If you produce another poll that asks us to pick only from those films, what new information will we get? I guess we'll get our order of preference for our top ten? (And I'm not sure how that'll be accomplished if you're using a PF poll - they're pretty limited. So I conclude you'll be using an external polling tool.)

I'm happy to participate; I just don't know what I'm doing.

[ UPDATE ] Case-in-point: as I mentioned, there's only two movies in the first poll that I would put in my top 40. So I only cast 2 votes.

My idea was to get a number of nominated movies from those who want to nominate (this thread), and then let anyone on the forum vote on the top nominated movies (the two polls).

Well it would not be the first time someone did an experiment and afterwards realized that a different design would have given more information. Which I did... kind of... suggest at the start.

A main benefit has been it enabled people to mention things worthy of being better known, as for example #73, 74 (quote function not working).
Ah yes, Cyrano!

José Ferrar was a talent we didn't see enough of. Hollywood gave him a hard time, if I remember right. The Shrike was memorable and tragic. Candidate for the list. Though many years since saw, can never forget his Cyrano

Who, Is, That, Man?

Never achieved the same effect when I said it. In a small circle of my friends phrases from Cyrano achieved catchword status. Like a small ache or pain would be bravely passed off as "Nothing, nothing. Just my old wound from Arras." When outnumbered in my polemics on other forums I may still fall back on

You there---Who are you? A hundred against one---
I know them now, my ancient enemies---
Falsehood!...There! There! Prejudice---Compromise---Cowardice---
What's that? No! Surrender? No!

Heroic. But enough of me! Cyrano gives me the occasion to let you know of the IMHO best comics to emerge in Italy in the last 20 years, a trio called Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo, who in the first clip below are rehearsing Cyrano, but something comes up. One of these guys is twice as intelligent as the other two. However the latter often steal the smart one's girlfriend. Without intention or special effort, it just happens. In the scene such an event is coming to light. Oh, just a kiss, nothing more. That's his story anyway. But then, to hear Cyrano, a kiss is not just a kiss.

“And what is a kiss, specifically? A pledge properly sealed, a promise seasoned to taste, a vow stamped with the immediacy of a lip, a rosy circle drawn around the verb 'to love.' A kiss is a message too intimate for the ear, infinity captured in the bee's brief visit to a flower, secular communication with an aftertaste of heaven, the pulse rising from the heart to utter its name on a lover's lip: 'Forever.”

You don't have to understand the words to get the gist, and what I am particularly drawing to your attention is the way that all three of the trio combine .

You should also not miss this. They have moved on a bit, Giacomo .is still apologising and excusing himself while Gianni is saying OK don't talk about it any more, and then...
