Has Gravitational radiation been found

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the speculation surrounding the potential detection of gravitational waves by the aLIGO team. While some express skepticism about the current rumors, there is a general belief that a confirmed detection is likely in the near future. However, it is noted that aLIGO is not expected to reach its full sensitivity until 2019, which may delay any significant findings unless a major event occurs nearby. The community is cautious, emphasizing the importance of thorough verification before any announcements are made. Overall, the anticipation for a confirmed detection of gravitational waves continues to grow.

I expect the aLIGO team will only release their detection results after a very thorough humor check. No one is particularly anxious to unleash an encore performance to BICEP2

"Now the question is whether persistent rumors that the experiment has detected the long-sought waves are accurate..."

Ah, Publicity!

From what I've read about aLIGO's sensitivity, there's little doubt in my mind that a confirmed direct detection of gravity waves will come (relatively) soon, even if these rumors don't pan out.

Apparently aLIGO isn't expected to achieve its design sensitivity until 2019, though, so unless there's a pretty large nearby event, it may still be a few years yet.

Asteroid, Data - 1.2% risk of an impact on December 22, 2032. The estimated diameter is 55 m and an impact would likely release an energy of 8 megatons of TNT equivalent, although these numbers have a large uncertainty - it could also be 1 or 100 megatons. Currently the object has level 3 on the Torino scale, the second-highest ever (after Apophis) and only the third object to exceed level 1. Most likely it will miss, and if it hits then most likely it'll hit an ocean and be harmless, but...
