Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a high school student's self-assessment of their progress in mathematics and science. The participant seeks guidance on their current standing in relation to peers and the educational curriculum, expressing feelings of uncertainty and comparison to others in the community.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • The student is studying Singapore Math (College Math) Volume 1 and has covered basic calculus, differentiation, and integration.
  • The student is currently in high school physics and has previously completed chemistry and biology, although they feel the need to review biology.
  • One participant suggests that the student's school curriculum should provide adequate exposure to various subjects, implying that they will have a clearer idea of their interests by university.
  • Another participant notes that the student appears to be ahead in mathematics compared to their own experience at the same age, while science progress seems similar.
  • There is an expression of uncertainty regarding the educational systems in different countries, with the student clarifying they are in Australia.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that the student is making satisfactory progress, with one noting they are ahead in mathematics. However, there is no consensus on a definitive assessment of the student's overall standing, as the discussion includes varying perspectives on educational expectations.

Contextual Notes

The discussion reflects differing educational systems and personal experiences, which may influence perceptions of progress. There are also assumptions about the adequacy of the curriculum and the student's comfort level with current material.

Who May Find This Useful

High school students assessing their academic progress in STEM subjects, educators providing guidance on curriculum expectations, and individuals interested in comparative educational experiences across countries.

I'm currently 16, doing second-last year of High School.
For certain reasons, I'm "in the dark" in regard to where I am with my education :P.
It's just like ... when I come here on PF, my breath just gets taken away with the topics and levels of discussion which go on here; makes me kind of worried.

Here's what I'm doing:
Math - Singapore Math (College Math) Volume 1 (Corresponds to second last high school year, I think), done some basic calculus, differentiation and integration.

Science - In the middle of Highschool Physics, after completing Chemistry and Biology. Unfortunately Biology, from 2 years ago, has worked it's way out of my brain, and it's time for review.

I'd appreciate any guidance or input with what I should do.
Thanks!

I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. Your school's courses should give you enough exposure to each subfields to give a bit of idea what you do in each of them. Hopefully by the time you start applying for universities, you will have a general idea what you like to do. In the first year of two in the university, there will be more introductory type courses, as well as advisers in the departments to help you with deciding what you want to do.

(I am assuming education system in SG isn't too different from commonwealth countries like AU/NZ)

Actually I'm in Australia... complicated :P
Just wanted to know how I'm doing?, that is, am I ahead/behind/just right?

Looks like you are ahead a bit in maths comparing to when I was 16. In terms of science it looks pretty similar. As long as you are comfortable with the current curriculum in your classes, you're fine.
