SUMMARY

Face gears are a type of gear that, when oriented horizontally, have teeth that point upward instead of outward or inward. While they exist, face gears are not commonly used due to the superior performance of conical gears. Custom manufacturing is often required to obtain face gears, as they are not readily available from standard suppliers like SDP-SI or Boston Gear. Alternatives such as bevel gears or ring and pinion gears can be considered for similar applications.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of gear types, specifically face gears and conical gears
  • Familiarity with gear manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge of mechanical design principles
  • Basic comprehension of gear performance metrics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research custom manufacturing options for face gears
  • Explore the specifications and applications of bevel gears
  • Learn about the design and functionality of ring and pinion gears
  • Investigate the performance advantages of conical gears over face gears
USEFUL FOR

Mechanical engineers, gear designers, and anyone involved in custom gear manufacturing or seeking alternatives to traditional gear types.

is there such thing as a gear that when laid horizontally has teeth that point up intead of out or in?

Yup, although not commonly used as conical gears do their job better.

They would probably have to be custom manufactured. Can you not use another type, like bevel gears or ring & pinion?
