Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the calculation of horsepower, specifically how to determine the horsepower generated by moving a weight of 19 lbs a distance of 1.5 inches in one second. The conversation touches on unit conversions and the definition of horsepower in terms of work done over time.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Mathematical reasoning

Main Points Raised

  • One participant states that 1 horsepower is defined as moving 300 lbs a distance of 100 feet in one minute.
  • Another participant suggests performing unit conversions to solve the problem, questioning the conversion factors between inches and feet, and seconds and minutes.
  • A participant raises a concern about the wording of the original statement, indicating that the 300 lbs may be interpreted as weight rather than force.
  • Another participant clarifies that one horsepower equals 550 foot-pounds of work done in one second or 33,000 foot-pounds in one minute, implying that the original claim may need further scrutiny regarding the work required to move the weight.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the interpretation of the original statement regarding horsepower and the calculations involved. Multiple viewpoints and interpretations remain present in the discussion.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved assumptions regarding the definitions of weight and force, as well as the specific calculations needed to convert the original problem into a usable format for determining horsepower.

Hello Wizards!

O.K. I know that 1 horsepower is generated by moving 300 lbs 100 feet in one minute.

The question I seem unable to answer is...

How many horsepower is generated by moving 19 lbs 1-1/2 inches in 1 second?

Help please ( my brain is exploding )

Best Regards,

Bill

How many inches in a foot? How many seconds in a minute? Just do the unit conversion.

The way that's worded makes it sound like the 300lb is the weight of the object, not the force...

Like a lot of things people "know", this sounds like it might be true. However, the facts get in the way of a good story.

One horsepower = 550 foot-pounds of work done in one second, or 33,000 foot-pounds of work done in one minute.

Whether it actually takes 300 foot-pounds of work to move 300 pounds a distance of one foot is another story.

Thank you all!
B.
