SUMMARY

One horsepower is defined as 550 foot-pounds of work done in one second, equating to 33,000 foot-pounds in one minute. To calculate horsepower generated by moving 19 lbs over 1.5 inches in one second, unit conversion is essential. The discussion clarifies that the initial assumption regarding the weight and force relationship may be misleading. Accurate understanding of these conversions is crucial for proper calculations.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics concepts related to work and force
  • Familiarity with unit conversions, specifically between pounds, feet, and seconds
  • Knowledge of horsepower as a unit of measurement
  • Basic mathematical skills for performing calculations
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the formula for calculating horsepower based on force and distance
  • Learn about unit conversion techniques for weight and distance measurements
  • Explore the relationship between work, force, and energy in physics
  • Investigate real-world applications of horsepower in engineering and mechanics
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, engineers, mechanics, and anyone interested in understanding the principles of work and horsepower calculations.

Hello Wizards!

O.K. I know that 1 horsepower is generated by moving 300 lbs 100 feet in one minute.

The question I seem unable to answer is...

How many horsepower is generated by moving 19 lbs 1-1/2 inches in 1 second?

Help please ( my brain is exploding )

Best Regards,

Bill

How many inches in a foot? How many seconds in a minute? Just do the unit conversion.

The way that's worded makes it sound like the 300lb is the weight of the object, not the force...

Like a lot of things people "know", this sounds like it might be true. However, the facts get in the way of a good story.

One horsepower = 550 foot-pounds of work done in one second, or 33,000 foot-pounds of work done in one minute.

Whether it actually takes 300 foot-pounds of work to move 300 pounds a distance of one foot is another story.

Thank you all!
B.
