Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the perceptions and implications of SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles) in contemporary society. Participants explore various aspects including environmental impact, practicality, and personal preferences regarding vehicle types. The conversation touches on cultural attitudes towards SUVs, their usage in urban settings, and the broader implications for society and the environment.

Discussion Character

 • Debate/contested
 • Conceptual clarification
 • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

 • Some participants express disdain for SUVs, labeling them as unnecessary and environmentally unfriendly, particularly in urban areas with good public transportation.
 • Others argue that the popularity of SUVs is driven by emotional appeal rather than practical needs, suggesting that many owners do not utilize their vehicles for off-road purposes.
 • A participant mentions the potential for hydrogen-powered vehicles, suggesting that this could lead to a resurgence of powerful cars while improving fuel efficiency.
 • Concerns are raised about the safety implications of larger vehicles, with some arguing that the increased size of SUVs may not necessarily translate to better safety outcomes in collisions.
 • One participant critiques the trend of purchasing large vehicles for city driving, questioning the practicality and environmental impact of such choices.
 • A later post references an article criticizing the SUV trend, highlighting issues such as emissions regulations and the disconnect between vehicle size and actual usage needs.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants exhibit a range of opinions on SUVs, with no clear consensus. Some express strong opposition to their use, while others defend them based on personal preferences or perceived benefits. The discussion remains unresolved with competing views on the necessity and implications of SUVs.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference various assumptions about vehicle usage, environmental impact, and societal norms regarding transportation. There are unresolved questions about the effectiveness of current regulations and the motivations behind consumer choices in vehicle purchases.

I can say this because I was properly educated on how to drive, and had lots of practice. If I'm doing triple digits on a public road, there is nobody else around me. I've never, not once, had a so much as a close call at high speeds because I KNOW HOW TO DRIVE.

and the thing here is that, everyone should know how to drive.

Dumbass. Alexander Zanardi knows how to drive, he can drive 100 times better than you and their are no innocent drivers where he is driving, everyone knows how to drive. Your logic is so flawed.

Zanardi was the best driver ever, and he was surronded by that. Yet, he made a mistake and lost his legs.

Greg Moore was one of the best Canadian Indy Car drivers, who also drove better than you and was surronded by better drivers, yet he lost his life.

You are so stupid, that statement was stupid. You don't think before you post something do you?

That famous NASCAR driver knew how to drive, and he was killed.

All those prove your inane theory wrong. So, you do know how to drive, learn to use a sense of logic now, or is that too difficult?

As far as your little references to plowing over trees and deers, that is pure stupdity. People who go offroading cannot afford the damage done for one, and also tend to enjoy the serenity that nature has to offer.

Offroading is spelt wrong.

If they enjoyed the serenity, maybe they shouldn't take their V8 engine and diesel gas through the forest. You do realize that SUV give out a toxic that tortures flora, right? I guess you don't.

Most people who enjoy serenity, would hike.

Let me find a definition of serenity, since you seem to be too much of an idiot to find one yourself.

The state or quality of being serene.
1. Unaffected by disturbance; calm and unruffled. See Synonyms at calm.
2. Unclouded; fair: serene skies and a bright blue sea.
3. often Serene Used as a title and form of address for certain members of royalty: Her Serene Highness; His Serene Highness.

Lets take number 1, as the one that fits best.

Unaffected by disturbace. I think an animal would be disturbed when a large car comes rumbling through their habitat, wouldn't you? Would you like me to take my Jeep and run it through your house? Real serene.

Again you fail miserably to make a point, but to damage your own image in the end.

chevy suburban was the first SUV
and is still made, as is the GMC version

a government job required me to drive them for over 20 years
btw we weight the full loaded [overloaded?] truck on a scale and got 8700lbs GVW

they handel like pigs, don't stop for chit
but are good if someother fool hits you,
as we just rolldown the window and say you shouldn't have done that, do you need medical help??

tax them, require a heavy truck license for the drivers, and inforce lowered speed limits on them, and high ins rates.

btw I drive a mid-eng sportscar and a old volvo turbo wagon for a stuff hauler

i think what he was saying was that he drove like that when no one was around... that's quite a bit different than competitive racing at high speeds. occasionally I've gone to triple digits as well on the way home from work around 1 am, on the highway on a straight stretch, with no other cars around.

i feel the biggest problem with transportation today is the lack of driving skill in drivers. the tests are way too easy, and often the worst drivers i knew did the best on the road test.

Offroading is spelt wrong.

"offroading"? since when?

If they enjoyed the serenity, maybe they shouldn't take their V8 engine and diesel gas through the forest. You do realize that SUV give out a toxic that tortures flora, right? I guess you don't.

again, i think he meant those types of people wouldn't want to disturb the serenity with their vehicles.

interpretation is a wonderful thing.

It doesn't matter if they don't WANT to. An SUV will disturb nature when you go through it with one.

SUV have been proven to give off different fumes that cause much harm to plants. Driving through a forest full of them won't help.

If you want to be part of the serenity and not disturb it, then hike.

Can you say 'cracker'?

Yes. Cracking isn't that hard to do either.

He was implying that if one was a good driver, no accidents could happen when I gave examples of the best drivers in the world who ended up in fatal or dangerious accidents.

He said that he never got into anything close to an accident because HE KNOWS HOW TO DRIVE, in his own words. Well, the drivers I listed knew how to drive, much better than him. They all got into accidents. They were surronded by people who also knew how to drive, so his assumptions was moronic.

Simple. Your interpretation isn't helping his comments, they were quite clear in what they meant.

Well, Zero and the other mods, let me apoligize in advance.

Now, wheres my baby powder?

He said that he never got into anything close to an accident because HE KNOWS HOW TO DRIVE, in his own words. Well, the drivers I listed knew how to drive, much better than him. They all got into accidents. They were surronded by people who also knew how to drive, so his assumptions was moronic.

Obviously, they can't drive better then me.

Or, you can take into acount they were doing damn near 200 mph, which your vehicle is barely on the damn ground. You could hit a friggin peanut at that speed and have a horrible wreck.

NASCAR, is not a skilled sport. The cars are setup to make left hand turns. They race on like 3 road courses a year. They might hit 100 mph. I'd out run a nascar in my Kia on a curvy road.

My driving skill is not in question here. There is no way I can prove it to you on this forum. It is besides the point. The point is, is that if more people were educated to the level that I, or any person who knows how to race, there would be less wrecks. Nowhere did I say there would be no wrecks.

Simple. Your interpretation isn't helping his comments, they were quite clear in what they meant.

And your interpretation is obviously one of a crackhead. Please seek help.

Dumbass. Alexander Zanardi knows how to drive, he can drive 100 times better than you and their are no innocent drivers where he is driving, everyone knows how to drive. Your logic is so flawed.

I will not argue his greatness. What I'm wondering is how you got all this information on me? How do you know I'm not the best driver on earth? What makes you so certain?

Offroading is spelt wrong.

Well, to be more correct, offroading is not actually a word to be spelled wrong to begin with. It should probably be off-roading, or even spelled as two words, say, off roading.

However, if you wish to argue this point, go talk to these guys:

www.offroading.net
www.rcjon.com/offroading/
www.derds.com/offroading.html
[PLAIN]www.hotornot.com/m/?keyword=offroading

To the rest of your comments, it begs the question "Is it possible for any other man to spew a greater amount of pure and utter rubbish then you?"

You get off on criticizing my driving ability, which is as unprovable here as the existence of a god, and my spelling of a word that doesn't officially exist.

I'm not going to waste my time looking for mistakes in your posts, because the ignorance, nay, pure stupidity you present is enough.

I was simply trying to suggest that improved education in driving would result in less collisions. You can continue being an ass, or we can try to have a discussion. Personally, I enjoy picking on the intentionally stupid.

You implied that you were a great driver, and because of that you never get into accidents. Well, I listed BETTER drivers than you who got into accidents which proves you and your theory to be idiotic.

URIs are many times spelt wrong. Notice that Physicsforums is one word in the URL yet on the logo it is 2? Dumbass.

If you want to spell-check using your browser's address bar go right ahead, it just shows more of your great common sense.

Oh wait, I forgot, you never make mistakes because you are a great driver. Too bad you're still an idiot.
