How Can I Build a Golf Ball Roller Coaster with Recycled Materials?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on constructing a golf ball roller coaster using recycled materials, specifically requiring two loops and two hills with a height change of 20 cm each. Participants emphasize the use of cardboard and chicken wire, while prohibiting prefabricated materials and commercial purchases. Suggestions include utilizing newspaper and water for added sturdiness in construction. The challenge lies in finding adequate support structures without relying on traditional building materials.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics principles related to roller coaster design
  • Familiarity with construction techniques using recycled materials
  • Knowledge of structural integrity and weight distribution
  • Experience with crafting tools suitable for cardboard and wire manipulation
NEXT STEPS
  • Research techniques for reinforcing cardboard structures
  • Explore methods for creating stable bases using wood
  • Investigate the properties of chicken wire for support in roller coaster design
  • Learn about the principles of kinetic energy and momentum in roller coaster mechanics
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for educators, students in engineering or design fields, hobbyists interested in DIY projects, and anyone looking to create innovative structures using recycled materials.

I have to make a roller coaster for a golf ball. It has to be made out of recycled materials. This also means no materials for construction (but chicken wire is allowed) and no prefabricated materials (Legos, Kenex, etc)
2 loops, 2 hills. Each hill has to be 20 cm height change.
Can anyone give me suggestions on materials and what is the best way to build this type of contraption. I really do not have many tools and am trying to do this mostly with cardboard, but it isn't working out very well.

So, in addition to chicken wire netting you are allowed to use cardboard. What other materials are you allowed to use?

Anything that is not commercial or purchased. We can not use any type of pre-fabricated materials, and we are not allowed to go to home depot to purchase anything. The only wood we can use is on the base, not as support for the contraption.
I am having a hard time finding sturdy enough support to create this coaster.

It seems to me that with cardboard, newspaper, and water (and enough time for things to dry) it should be pretty easy.
