SUMMARY

To combine measurement uncertainties, when both uncertainties are random and independent, one must add the squares of the absolute uncertainties and then take the square root of the sum. In this case, with a random uncertainty of 0.02 and a scale reading uncertainty of 0.01, the combined uncertainty is calculated using the formula: √(0.02² + 0.01²). This method yields the absolute uncertainty of the measurement, which can then be converted to percentage uncertainty if needed.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of random and independent uncertainties
  • Familiarity with absolute and percentage uncertainty concepts
  • Basic knowledge of mathematical operations involving squares and square roots
  • Proficiency in measurement techniques and error analysis
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of error propagation in measurements
  • Learn about combining uncertainties in different measurement contexts
  • Explore statistical methods for analyzing measurement data
  • Investigate tools for calculating uncertainties, such as MATLAB or Python libraries
USEFUL FOR

Researchers, engineers, and scientists involved in experimental measurements and data analysis who need to accurately combine and interpret measurement uncertainties.

i have a measurement which has random uncertainty of 0.02 and scale reading 0.01. how do i combine these uncertainties - add in quadrature the percentage uncertainty or the absolute uncertainty? and does this give the percentage uncertainty or the absolute uncertainty of my measurement?

thanks

If both uncertainties are random and independent, add the squares of the absolute uncertainties and take the square root.
