Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the relationship between gravity and time, specifically how gravity influences the passage of time in the universe. It touches on theoretical aspects, mathematical formulations, and practical implications such as GPS satellite adjustments.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions the link between gravity and time, seeking clarification on how they are connected.
  • Another participant presents a mathematical equation related to time dilation due to gravity, referencing general relativity as the theoretical basis.
  • A later reply expresses skepticism about the clarity of the explanation provided, indicating a need for further elaboration.
  • Further contributions mention practical applications of the equation, such as adjustments needed for GPS satellite clocks and implications for time experienced at different altitudes.
  • Complex explanations involving advanced concepts like space-time tensors and Kerr metrics are suggested, though they ultimately lead back to the notion that gravity influences time "because it does."
  • Participants acknowledge the complexity of the topic, with one expressing gratitude for the information shared.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants exhibit a mix of agreement on the existence of a relationship between gravity and time, but there is no consensus on the clarity of explanations or the depth of understanding among participants.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes references to advanced mathematical concepts and theories that may not be fully explained, leaving some assumptions and dependencies on definitions unresolved.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be of interest to those exploring the implications of general relativity, time dilation, and practical applications in technology such as GPS systems.

If gravity slows time, how and are they linked?

Physics news on Phys.org
How :
t = t_f sqrt(1 - 2GM/rc^2) M is the mass, r is the distance from centre of mass

Why :
simple answer - because that's what general relativity says.
complex answer - because that's the way the universe works.

Yep that clears it aaaaall up.

Lol

If you want to work out how much to adjust your GPS satelite clock, or how much longer you will live on the top floor of the apartment - then the equation tells you.
As to why, there are answers involving space time tensors, kerr metrics, relativistic frame dragging etc - but they pretty much come down "because it does" but with more maths.

Ok it's complicated.
Thanks
Chris
