How does society function like a living organism?

I always wonder if a society (a large group of people) works as a living-organism.

A society of people grows in size. It gets old. It starts deteriorating at a certain point in time. People are born and die as if living cell of a human body.

When I hear about various aspects of social events, I am always curious about its functionalities.
