AI Thread Summary
Dr. Ryland Grace's journey to Tau Ceti involves a constant acceleration of 1.5g for half the trip, followed by deceleration at the same rate. The discussion centers on calculating the percentage of the speed of light he would achieve after accelerating for 6.5 years. Participants are encouraged to explore the concept of relativistic acceleration and utilize relevant formulas found through online searches. The focus is on understanding the implications of constant acceleration in space travel and its effects on velocity as it approaches the speed of light.

For those of you who haven't read the book, it is a science fiction story in which a man named Dr Ryland Grace travels to Tau Ceti. The star is approximately 12 light years from Earth, and he got there in about 13 years, which for him was a 3 year journey. He is accelerating at 1,5g constantly for half the journey, then decelerating at 1.5g for the other half.

What percentage of the speed of light would he reach after accelerating at 1.5g for 6 and a half years?

What do you think and why? Googling for “relativistic acceleration” will find some useful formulas.

Man, when the Devil comes a-knockin', he does not smell of sulphur and brimstone, he smells of sweet perfume and roses... Doing a bit of research for a short story. All I wanted was some examples of professions typical for jurors in a trial of the time and location of the story (1850s New Orleans - of which I am not very familiar, so I have my work cut out for me). ChatGPT delivered that very nicely, giving me a list of a dozen typical professions for the type of man that was eligible for...
