SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the manifestation of Lorentz contraction in distant supernovae, particularly those receding from Earth at relativistic speeds. It was established that a distant supernova exhibits a slower light curve compared to a nearby one. The conversation clarified that Lorentz contraction does not necessarily accompany time dilation, contradicting the assumption that both phenomena occur simultaneously. For further reading, participants recommended Padmanabhan's paper on the topic.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of relativistic physics concepts
  • Familiarity with supernova light curves
  • Knowledge of time dilation effects
  • Basic comprehension of Lorentz transformations
NEXT STEPS
  • Read Padmanabhan's paper on relativistic effects in astrophysics
  • Explore the implications of Lorentz contraction in high-velocity astrophysical phenomena
  • Investigate the relationship between time dilation and Lorentz contraction
  • Study the behavior of light curves in various astronomical contexts
USEFUL FOR

Astronomers, physicists, and students of relativistic physics interested in the effects of velocity on astronomical observations and the interplay between time dilation and Lorentz contraction.

Some time ago i posted a question about what happen with a supernova ocurring on a distant galaxy that was recessing from Earth at relativistic velocity, and the conclusion was that a distant supernova has a light curve much more slower than a nearby,
but then a new question arises to me, ¿what happen with the lorentz contraction in this case, how is it manifested or detected, is true that wherever there is time dilation necessarily there should be lorentz contraction?
