SUMMARY

Textbook solutions often round results to a single significant figure, as demonstrated in the discussion regarding the equation 4*10^6 - 1 * 10^4 / (0.01/0.5(4*10^6 - 1 * 10^4)). The calculator output of approximately 796,000,500,000,000 contrasts with the textbook's rounded result of 8.0 * 10^14. This indicates that the textbook rounds to 8.0, confirming that the user's calculation method is likely correct, as the difference is attributed to rounding conventions.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of scientific notation and significant figures
  • Basic proficiency in algebraic operations
  • Familiarity with rounding rules in mathematics
  • Experience using calculators for large numerical computations
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the rules of significant figures in mathematical calculations
  • Learn about rounding conventions in scientific and engineering contexts
  • Explore how to use scientific notation effectively in calculations
  • Investigate common pitfalls in numerical methods and their solutions
USEFUL FOR

Students in mathematics or engineering disciplines, educators teaching rounding and significant figures, and anyone involved in numerical analysis or computation.

this is just a small question, how much do textbook solutions usually round? I just did a question that came to an equation 4*10^6 - 1 * 10^4 / (0.01/0.5(4*10^6 - 1 * 10^4))
the calculator says like 796 000 500 000 000. something something and the textbook says that it should be 8.0 * 10^14.. well, it's close enough - but how can I ever know if it's just a rounding thing or my method was way off?

thanks

Hi emyt!

(try using the X2 tag just above the Reply box )

If it says 8.0, then it's rounding to 8.0 rather than 8.1 or 7.9 …

so it looks as if your 7.960005… is ok.
