SUMMARY

The discussion centers on determining whether to pursue a mathematics major or an engineering degree. The key recommendation is to take an introductory proofs class, which serves as a litmus test for interest in higher-level mathematics. Additionally, courses like Linear Algebra and Introduction to Number Theory are suggested as gateways to advanced mathematical concepts. The availability of these courses may vary by university, so consulting the math department is essential.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic calculus concepts
  • Familiarity with introductory proof techniques
  • Knowledge of Linear Algebra fundamentals
  • Awareness of Number Theory basics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research introductory proofs courses at your university
  • Explore Linear Algebra textbooks and resources
  • Investigate introductory Number Theory courses
  • Consult academic advisors about the math curriculum
USEFUL FOR

Students contemplating a major in mathematics or engineering, particularly those with a passion for math and seeking clarity on their academic path.

First of all, I love math, but i am only in calculus 1. and i hear that a math degree isn't really like calculus, once you get into the analysis and theory of math it can be very different, at least that's what i hear.

how can i figure out if a math major is for me, or if engineering is a better route.

thanks

Easy take an intro to proofs class. If you like it then math is for you.

It's also worth mentioning that not all schools have a course titled "intro to proofs" or some variant of it. Ask the math department to make sure. Courses such as Linear Algebra or an Introduction to Number Theory that can serve as gateways to upper division mathematics and proof techniques. It will depend on the university you're attending.
