SUMMARY

The primary consumer in the waters off the coast of Peru, as discussed, is likely a type of shrimp, potentially a copepod. The discussion emphasizes the importance of understanding marine ecosystems, particularly in relation to the food web. Participants eliminated phytoplankton and diatoms from consideration, focusing instead on zooplankton as the primary consumers. This highlights the complexity of marine biology and the need for accurate identification in ecological studies.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic knowledge of marine biology concepts
  • Familiarity with the food web structure in marine ecosystems
  • Understanding of zooplankton and their role as primary consumers
  • Ability to identify marine species through visual resources
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the role of copepods in marine ecosystems
  • Explore the diversity of shrimp species in the Pacific Ocean
  • Study the ecological significance of primary consumers in marine food webs
  • Learn about the identification techniques for marine plankton
USEFUL FOR

Marine biologists, ecology students, and anyone interested in understanding the dynamics of marine ecosystems and the identification of primary consumers.

I hope http://h1.ripway.com/Majo/MarineBiologyPic.bmp" loads...if it does, could someone direct me to a site that'd tell me what that is?

As we have seen in this module, the waters off the coast of Peru are special indeed. Can you name the important Primary Consumer in the above pictures? It's not necessary to name the specific species.

I scanned over the topics of each lesson and none mentiond Peru...so, I settled for rereading several articles I was linked to and I'm still not entirely sure.

I eliminated phytoplankton so that'd also eliminate diatoms, right? I, at one point, thought it was a Copepod because of a picture on http://www.biosbcc.net/ocean/marinesci/03ecology/mlplankton.htm" here but I need the points for this assignment...I wasn't sure if I should submit that answer.:frown:

I think your copepod guess is on the right track. Some sort of shrimp.
