Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the hypothetical scenario of a galaxy traveling at the speed of light towards the Milky Way and the implications of such an event, including the potential destruction of Earth and the lack of awareness of such a galaxy's existence. The conversation touches on speculative ideas about cosmic events and the nature of reality.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that if a galaxy were traveling towards us at light speed, we would not be aware of it until it was too late, leading to instant destruction.
  • Another participant counters that no massive objects, including galaxies, can travel at the speed of light, emphasizing that typical relative velocities between galaxies are much lower.
  • A repeated assertion from the first participant reiterates the idea of instant destruction and the implications of a hypothetical scenario involving memory erasure across the multiverse.
  • There is a light-hearted comment questioning the presence of trolling on the forum.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach consensus; there is a clear disagreement regarding the feasibility of galaxies traveling at light speed and the implications of such a scenario.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes speculative elements that rely on assumptions about cosmic behavior and the nature of reality, which remain unresolved.

If another galaxy were to be traveling towards us at the speed of light and as well as the Milky Way being ripped apart or merged, our planet were to suffer a direct hit, we would never know about it! Gone in an instant!

Also, we would not know, or do not know, of the existence of such a galaxy because of its speed.

So, if this does not appear on this forum, it's already happened and none of us are here!

Hi AncientBrit; welcome to PhysicsForums.
Please consult the rules, specifically the section on Overly Speculative Posts.

No massive objects can travel at the speed of light---especially a galaxy. The relative velocities between galaxies tends to be fairly moderate---generally 100's of km/s---and far below the speed of light.

If I were to become the supreme being of all the multiverse and then erase all of humanities memories and it wasnt on this forum then its already happened!

Also this could mean... sorry I got distracted by the blue and yellow spotted dwarf piglet flying past the window.

Please don't post rubbish. **Awaits thread locking**

I wasn't aware that people trolled on PF. Hah
