Discussion Overview

The thread discusses an impending storm, with participants sharing observations and experiences related to storm phenomena, particularly in Sydney. The conversation includes descriptions of cloud formations and the classification of the storm's severity, focusing on both meteorological terminology and personal anecdotes.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants inquire whether the storm approaching Sydney is at hurricane level.
  • Others clarify that it is a major thunderstorm with reported wind speeds of 75 - 100 km/hr (40 - 60 miles/hr).
  • Descriptions of cloud formations include mentions of a funnel cloud and "skud" clouds, with some participants debating their significance.
  • One participant expresses surprise at the knowledge of the term "skud cloud," suggesting it is not commonly known outside meteorological circles.
  • There are personal anecdotes about storm experiences, including references to storm chasing and cloud observations.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the classification of the storm, with some suggesting it is a major thunderstorm while others initially question if it could be hurricane-level. The discussion includes multiple viewpoints regarding cloud formations and their interpretations.

Contextual Notes

Some participants mention the potential for confusion between scud clouds and tornadic funnels, highlighting the need for careful observation to determine significant rotation.

It also appears to have a funnel and then what we call a "skud" cloud to the left of the funnel.

they were both just skud cloud lowerings

OK Evo, now you have impressed me ;) you are a storm aficionado if you know the term skud cloud :)
non-stormchasers/met office people don't usually know that term

I live in Kansas, before I lived many years in Houston, TX, so, yes, I am into storms and tornadoes.

I just used that term, like 2 hours ago, looking out the office window, I described some clouds as scudding. I didn't know it was meteorological; I thought it was literary.

Haven't been in Kansas stormchasing since 2006, lack of funds have stopped more visits

cool, Dave ...
Over the years, there's been many a scud cloud mistaken as a tornadic funnel. People don't observe long enough to determine significant rotation etc

here's a crop of that area from the full sized image
