Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the use of a fake orca to deter sea lions in Astoria, exploring the effectiveness and practicality of this approach. Participants consider the implications of using a parade float designed to resemble an orca and suggest alternative methods for addressing the sea lion issue.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express skepticism about the effectiveness of a parade float resembling an orca in scaring off sea lions, suggesting that the animals may easily distinguish between a real orca and a fake one.
  • One participant humorously proposes that a submarine designed to look like an orca might be a more effective solution.
  • Another participant advocates for reverting to traditional methods used in the past to manage sea lion populations, implying that these methods may have been more successful.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally disagree on the effectiveness of the fake orca approach, with some questioning its viability and others suggesting alternative solutions. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best method to address the sea lion problem.

ASTORIA, OR (KPTV) -

Efforts to remove hundreds of nuisance sea lions in Astoria took a strange turn Thursday, with the Port of Astoria deploying a boat-like contraption made to resemble an orca to scare off the animals.

was originally built as a parade float, but when it's designer heard of the Port's sea lion problem, he offered its services.

Well, I think we got to give Sea Lions a bit more credit on being able to recognize a live Orca and a parade float.

Will the wonders of science never cease... Perhaps they should have made a sub that looks like an orca...

We need to use the tried and true solution from the past.
