Mystery particle spotted? Discovery would require physics so weird that nobody has even thought of it

The recent discussion centers around the potential discovery of a mystery particle, which some speculate could be dark matter (DM). However, experts express skepticism, citing that previous similar signals have not been confirmed in subsequent data runs. The probability of the observed peak being a statistical fluctuation is estimated at 1 in 750, and the CMS collaboration has not corroborated this finding with later data. Overall, while there is excitement among particle physicists, it is tempered by caution and a recognition of past disappointments in similar claims.
PREREQUISITESParticle physicists, science communicators, and anyone interested in the intersection of media and scientific discovery will benefit from this discussion.
They've found other signals like this before, but they all disappeared with more runs. I wouldn't get my hopes up yet. Plus, if it were DM, then it wouldn't have decayed. DM is supposed to be incredibly stable.Arman777 said:Mystery particle spotted? Discovery would require physics so weird that nobody has even thought of it

I don't question his expertise, he is clearly an expert.websterling said:I don't think he worked on this particular study, but he is fairly well credentialed. This gives a nice overview of his career-
