SUMMARY

The NIDA Summer Internship Program is primarily designed for students in biological sciences, making it less relevant for physics majors. However, participation can still provide valuable research experience, especially for minorities, as it includes a stipend. Alternatives such as NASA and MIT summer programs are more aligned with physics and may offer competitive advantages for students pursuing a career in this field. High school students should weigh the benefits of diverse research experiences against their specific academic interests.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of internship application processes
  • Familiarity with research opportunities in STEM fields
  • Knowledge of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and its focus areas
  • Awareness of summer programs offered by NASA and MIT
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the NIDA Summer Internship Program details and eligibility requirements
  • Explore NASA's summer internship offerings for high school students
  • Investigate MIT's summer programs and their application processes
  • Evaluate the benefits of interdisciplinary research experience in physics
USEFUL FOR

High school students interested in internships, particularly those majoring in physics, as well as educators guiding students in selecting research opportunities.

I am a Senior in high school, and my physics teacher gave our class information about an intern at the National Institute on drug abuse. It is geared for minorities which I am, and theI can receive stipend. However it is primarily geared for biological sciences. I plan on majorin in physics. Would it be worth participtaing in this? Here is a link for the program. http://www.drugabuse.gov/sites/default/files/files/2013SummerResearchBrochure.pdf

Any research experience would be useful. But there are other opportunities out there for physics - NASA and MIT both offer summer programs for high school students.

Are those programs competitive?
