Should I take a TOEIC test ?

I used to take a Toefl paper test and scored 606, now my boss tells me to take a TOEIC test that I must score at least 420.
I think it's a waste of money and time. If my boss wants to know my English level, he might offer a thorough test of multiple choice.

He told me that I will be fired if I wouldn't hand in my certificate!
By the way I am working for a IT consulting service provider in my area.

Thanks

It seems strange to me to make you re-take something and get "at least" 420 when you've already gotten a 606, but maybe I'm missing some information here. Seems like your choices are to get fired or take the test, no?

Sometimes you have to do really nonsensical things to keep a job.

I'll just take the test. Getting fired or quitting over something like this is silly.

This post is baffling. What does that have to do with anything?

Unfortunately sometimes you need to just bite your lip and listen to your boss. You could point out that it costs money to do - say that you would be happy to take the test but ask if they might help you with the costs.

Perhaps your company is looking for English speaking ability scores. http://www.ets.org/toeic

The paper-based TOEFL test does not cover the speaking test, the internet-based TOEFL does though. But I wonder if companies are looking at TOEFL scores, since only university applications require TOEFL.

Check the ETS site for clarifications.

Edit: The TOEIC test is considered by companies, maybe that's why your TOEFL scores weren't considered. Also, TOEIC has an English speaking assessment test.
