Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of a VPN (Virtual Private Network) that restricts access to only certain websites, rather than providing unrestricted internet access. Participants explore the implications and potential use cases for such a VPN, including corporate environments and parental controls.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants inquire whether a VPN exists that limits access to specific websites rather than allowing full internet access.
  • One participant notes that companies may use such VPNs to restrict access for corporate users only.
  • Another participant questions the rationale behind wanting a VPN with limited capabilities, suggesting that it seems unnecessary.
  • A different viewpoint suggests that limiting access could be useful for parental controls, although the practicality of this is questioned.
  • A participant provides a brief explanation of VPNs, stating that they can be configured to allow access to specific networks or the entire internet, likening it to a firewall.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the necessity and practicality of a VPN that restricts access to certain websites, with no consensus reached on its desirability or common use cases.

Contextual Notes

There are assumptions about the intended use of such a VPN and its effectiveness in practical scenarios, which remain unresolved in the discussion.

Am told there's a VPN that only gives access to certain websites. So it's not one enabling you to surf the internet as if you were in a virtual place, accessing all websites that are 'local' to that virtual place. Is there such a VPN?

Just out of curiosity, why would you WANT such a limited capability?

no one does. it's just sth i heard of and wonder why it's designed as such

Couldn't someone want a capability to limit (e.g. to restrict his kids (not that realistically that's practicable)), as distinguished from a limited capability?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, it allow you to connect to a network over a network connection. It was traditionally used to provide access to a specific network only, for example to allow people to work remotely while still accessing the office computers/servers while dialled in via a modem.. The fact the internet came along afterwards is just coincidense and the you could also grant access to the internet if you wished.

Generally speaking that server your VPN connects to can be configured to allow access to whatever it wants you to, be it a single web server, a company network, or the entire internet. If you like it can work like a firewall.
