SUMMARY

The equation y=1/4x is linear, representing a straight line with a slope of 1/4. This equation is interpreted as y = (1/4) · x, which fits the standard linear form y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. The discussion emphasizes that understanding the definition of linear equations is crucial for determining linearity without graphing. Tools like Excel can assist in visualizing the equation, but the definition alone suffices for classification.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of linear equations and their standard form (y = mx + b).
  • Basic algebraic manipulation skills.
  • Familiarity with graphing concepts.
  • Knowledge of using Excel for data visualization.
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the properties of linear equations and their graphs.
  • Learn how to create and interpret tables of values for linear functions.
  • Explore the use of Excel for plotting equations and analyzing data.
  • Review the differences between linear and non-linear equations.
USEFUL FOR

Students learning algebra, educators teaching linear equations, and anyone interested in understanding the fundamentals of graphing and equation classification.

Alright

i have an equation that is y=1/4x

and i can't figure out if the equation is linear or not

because i left my graphing calculator at school

So do it the old-fashioned way. Make a table of values and plot them. Or of course there is always Excel or something like that.

Is this equation y = (1/4) · x ["one quarter times x"] or y = 1/(4x) ["one divided by four times x"]? What makes an equation linear? (The definition will tell you the answer without having to make a graph.) Do you recall the equation for a straight line on a graph?
