It's Official. Stevens to retire.

In summary, Supreme Court Justice Stevens has announced his retirement at the end of the current session. The potential nominees for his replacement include a Liberal candidate with more experience and less resistance, as well as Gary Locke, who would be the first Asian-American on the bench. There is speculation that the Republicans in the Senate may try to filibuster the nominee, but this could backfire with Independent voters. Some believe that choosing a reasonable candidate and accusing the Republicans of obstruction would be a strategic political move.

I think he'll choose the Liberal with the least resistance (and more experience this time).

Hard to tell what his path might be. Republicans in the Senate are telegraphing a willingness to filibuster, though that might be quite problematic with Independents if it is seen as just one more attempt to deny Obama anything he wants. Gary Locke would be an interesting choice. Secretary of Commerce, already vetted by the Senate would be the first Asian-American on the bench. He's probably not on anybody's short-list, but he'd be a hard nominee for the GOP to filibuster without more backlash from Independent voters.

I think that the right political move would be to choose the most reasonable candidate that the Republicans would filibuster, then accuse them of obstructing.

They've been doing nothing but obstructing for the last year, and no one seems to care. What's one more?

What is the news about Stevens retiring?

The news is about Justice John Paul Stevens, the second oldest and longest-serving justice on the United States Supreme Court, announcing his retirement after 35 years of service.

Who is Justice John Paul Stevens?

Justice John Paul Stevens is a former associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. He was appointed by President Gerald Ford in 1975 and served until his retirement in 2010.

Why is Stevens retiring?

Stevens has stated that he is retiring because he believes it is time for him to step down and allow a younger justice to take his place. He also cited his age and health as factors in his decision to retire.

What impact will Stevens' retirement have on the Supreme Court?

Stevens' retirement will create a vacancy on the Supreme Court, giving President Obama the opportunity to appoint a new justice. This could potentially shift the balance of the court and impact future decisions.

When will Stevens officially retire?

Stevens has announced that he will retire at the end of the Supreme Court's current term, which is typically at the end of June. This will give the President and the Senate time to appoint and confirm a new justice before the start of the next term in October.
