SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the correct IUPAC nomenclature for the compound 2-oxo-cyclopentanitrile versus 2-cyano-cyclopentanone. It is established that the cyano (CN) group has a higher priority than the ketone functional group, making 2-cyano-cyclopentanone the more accurate name. However, the IUPAC guidelines allow for the use of either name as long as it remains unambiguous. References to PubChem confirm the validity of both names in practice.

PREREQUISITES

Homework Statement

Which name is more correct, 2-oxo-cyclopentanitrile or 2-cyano-cyclopentanone

2. The attempt at a solution

The priority of CN group is higher than ketone, so the first name should be correct but the second name is mentioned in my textbook
