Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the existence of errata in the Landau and Lifshitz series of textbooks. Participants share their experiences and thoughts on potential errors, notational issues, and the implications of these findings on their study process.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a desire for published errata to aid in their understanding of the series, noting the complexity of the material.
  • Another participant recalls that some books in the series included minor errata, primarily notational errors, and suggests that these do not significantly detract from the quality of the texts.
  • There is a humorous challenge to the idea of Landau being wrong, with one participant questioning the notion and another responding in jest.
  • A later reply suggests that if errors exist, they should be attributed to those who transcribed Landau's work rather than Landau himself.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the extent or significance of errors in the textbooks, with some acknowledging minor issues while others humorously contest the idea of Landau being incorrect.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention that the errors are typically minor and notational, but the discussion does not clarify the specific nature or frequency of these errors across the series.

Hi everyone,

I am currently going through L&L slowly but surely (it's like 1 page Landau = 5 pages of notes/connections). I was wondering if anyone knew if there were any published errata for the series. Haven't found any in my Google searches. What I'm talking about is usually notational and can typically figure out where things go awry but would like a heads up as I go through the books (unless it's intentional for the learning process lol).

I bought the whole series about 30 years ago. I'd say that 2 out of 5 books had inserted one loose page of errata. These corrections were very minor, usually a small notation error. I wouldn't worry about them. The books are great otherwise.

Yes, I like it cold... 🙃

If there are errors in the textbooks it's of course not Landau who's wrong but whoever wrote his dictate down.
