Computer science news on Phys.org
you can get a nice averatec for about $950 and it comes with dvdrw and everything but with that budget I would go with ibm.

yeah I'm leaning towards an ibm ...but what i wanted to know is why should i choose one brand over another...like ibm over toshiba.

You can now get the ibm thinkpad Z in Titaninum:

Well for me it is more a matter of personal preference. I like toshiba, acer, averatec, etc. because they give you the technology at a cheaper price; in fact I have an acer laptop. I respect the IBM brand and I consider them high-end. If by CDN you mean Canadian dollars then that is a lot of money... you should be able to get the best vaio for that.

When you come up with a "short-list"... I'd search amazon, google/google-groups, etc... for reviews and complaints on your specific model.

Are you looking for an ultraportable? a desktop replacement? a gaming laptop? something with a long battery life?

Have you considered a TabletPC (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/tabletpc/) like
the IBM/Lenovo X41 http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/thinkpad/xseries/tablet/
the Motion LE1600 http://www.motioncomputing.com/products/tablet_pc_le.asp - https://www.motioncomputing.com/sto...CE=wtcategoryDetails&Category=Input DevicesLE
the HP Compaq tc4200 http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/tabletpc/tc4200/
the Acer tabletPCs http://global.acer.com/products/tablet_pc/ ?

They certainly have not lived up to the hype [Some blame poor marketing by Microsoft.]... and they're probably not for everybody right now. However, mine (a Motion M1200) has been just what I have needed for the past 2.5 years. I lecture with it (and a projector). I'll probably buy another tabletPC when I upgrade. If and when the tabletPCs become more mainstream, the prices would probably drop.

The hybrid tablet laptops are nice, especially if you are in a Network Opps center trying to ballance a Laptop on your knees while configing a 2850 ;-)
