Learning Math through Independent study

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the feasibility of learning mathematics through independent study, particularly focusing on the availability of resources that do not require a traditional classroom setting. Participants explore various online options and the potential drawbacks of self-directed learning.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions the possibility of effective independent study, noting that most resources are designed for classroom use.
  • Another participant argues that while independent study is possible, it may lead to entrenched misconceptions that a teacher could help identify.
  • A different participant expresses a lack of self-identified talent and seeks specific resources for independent learning outside a classroom context.
  • Several resources are suggested, including Khan Academy for online lessons and coaching, and a blog that lists books and lecture notes, some of which may be available for free or through unauthorized downloads.
  • One participant contends that learning alone may not be efficient, emphasizing the value of face-to-face interaction with an instructor for deeper understanding, especially in abstract subjects.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the effectiveness of independent study versus traditional learning methods. There is no consensus on the best approach or the sufficiency of available resources.

Contextual Notes

Some participants highlight the limitations of self-study, particularly regarding the identification and correction of misconceptions, which may depend on personal learning styles and the complexity of the material.

Is it possible? Most of the resources I find are geared toward college class situations. I do not want to learn how to learn with a lecturer. Is there anything online free that can teach and quiz without acting as a supplement for an expensive course or school setting?

Of course it is possible.

What you miss out on, is the opportunity to unlearn your own misconceptions, that a real human being can detect in a conversation with you.

And, believe me, such misconceptions are easily formed, and can become deeply entrenched, however talented you are to begin with.

I do not considered myself 'talented' but thanks for your 2 cents. Do you know any resources tho, not geared toward a classroom? I do have physics forums :p

You might try this site:
http://www.khanacademy.org/
It has a large number of online lessons, with videos. It even has the options of online coaches if you need them.

Check out http://hbpms.blogspot.com/
That site gives a lot of recommendations for books and online lecture notes. Lots of which are free available online or can be (illegaly) downloaded (:

I think it is not efficient enough to learn by oneself. A good instructor can help deepen your understanding in certain subjects-- especially the abstract ones. Also it's important that you can discuss your questions with someone face to face.
